Ethics Paper Week 1 Assignment Rheana Willis 01/08/2012 Dilemma Choice 2: A married couple, both addicted to drugs, are unable to care for their infant daughter. She is taken from them by court order and placed in a foster home. The years pass. We will write a custom essay sample on Ethics Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now She comes to regard her foster parents as her real parents. They love her as they would their own daughter. When the child is 9 years old, the natural parents, rehabilitated from drugs, begin court action to regain custody. The case is decided in their favor. The child is returned to them, against her will. Does ethics support the law in this case? Discuss. Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, is a branch of philosophy that involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior. Major branches of ethics include: Meta-ethics, about the theoretical meaning and reference of moral propositions and how their truth values (if any) may be determined; Normative ethics, about the practical means of determining a moral course of action; Applied ethics, about how moral outcomes can be achieved in specific situations; Within each of these branches are many different schools of thought and still further sub-fields of study. For this particular dilemma I chose Normative ethics and Applied ethics to solve and clarify the decision making process. Normative ethics is the study of ethical action. It is the branch of philosophical ethics that investigates the set of questions that arise when considering how one ought to act, morally speaking. Normative ethics is distinct from meta-ethics because it examines standards for the rightness and wrongness of actions, while meta-ethics studies the meaning of moral language and the metaphysics of moral facts. Normative ethics is also distinct from descriptive ethics, as the latter is an empirical investigation of peopleââ¬â¢s moral beliefs. To put it another way, descriptive ethics would be concerned with determining what proportion of people believe that killing is always wrong, while normative ethics is concerned with whether it is correct to hold such a belief. Hence, normative ethics is sometimes said to be prescriptive, rather than descriptive. Using this method of choice to solve this dilemma would mean that both the foster parents and the rehabilitated parents would have to come up with an agreement in which the child is seeing both her real parents and her foster parents until she is comfortable to move in with her real parents permanently. That would mean that both parents would have to set aside their differences for the sake of the child and work on having unity together. Applied ethics is, in the words of Brenda Almond, co-founder of the Society for Applied Philosophy, ââ¬Å"the philosophical examination, from a moral standpoint, of particular issues in private and public life that are matters of moral judgmentâ⬠. It is thus a term used to describe attempts to use philosophical methods to identify the morally correct course of action in various fields of human life. Applied ethics is distinguished from normative ethics, which concerns what people should believe to be right and wrong, and from meta-ethics, which concerns the nature of moral statements. Morally in this situation when using applied ethics, you solve the dilemma by act-utilitarianism. If raising their child on their own without involving the foster parents produces greater benefit than disbenefit, then, according to act-utilitarianism, it would be morally acceptable to do so, even if the child has been raised by them the first nine years of her life. Unfortunately, there are perhaps hundreds of rival normative principles from which to choose, many of which yield opposite conclusions. Thus, the stalemate in normative ethics between conflicting theories prevents us from using a single decisive procedure for determining the morality of a specific issue. The usual solution today to this stalemate is to consult several representative normative principles on a given issue and see where the weight of the evidence lies. When using Normative ethics to solve the dilemma it involves arriving at moral standards that regulate right and wrong conduct. In a sense, it is a search for an ideal litmus test of proper behavior. The Golden Rule is a classic example of a normative principle: We should do to others what we would want others to do to us. In Applied ethics resolving issues is easier based on consulting our normative principle of choice, such as act-utilitarianism, where if itââ¬â¢s going to benefit the parents to raise her on their own then they are acting morally by doing so. The only similarities between the two ethics are that normative ethic principles can go hand and hand with applied ethics, for instance: commonly appealed to in applied ethical discussions: * Personal benefit: acknowledge the extent to which an action produces beneficial consequences for the individual in question. * Social benefit: acknowledge the extent to which an action produces beneficial consequences for society. * Principle of benevolence: help those in need. Principle of paternalism: assist others in pursuing their best interests when they cannot do so themselves. * Principle of harm: do not harm others. * Principle of honesty: do not deceive others. * Principle of lawfulness: do not violate the law. * Principle of autonomy: acknowledge a personââ¬â¢s freedom over his/her actions or physical body. * Principle of justice: acknowledge a personââ¬â¢s right to due process, fair compensation for harm done, and fair distribution of benefits. Rights: acknowledge a personââ¬â ¢s rights to life, information, privacy, free expression, and safety I feel like these two school of ethics are better explained in real-life dilemmas because not only do they give you a better sense of whatââ¬â¢s right or wrong but also different perspectives on how to reach a moral and ethical decision. Aristotle would have approved of the decision made using normative ethics because ethics is a practical rather than a theoretical science; he also gave careful consideration to the aspects of human nature involved in acting and accepting moral responsibility. Although the virtues are habits of acting or dispositions to act in certain ways, Aristotle maintained that these habits are acquired by engaging in proper conduct on specific occasions and that doing so requires thinking about what one does in a specific way. This is the function of deliberative reasoning: to consider each of the many actions that are within oneââ¬â¢s power to perform, considering the extent to which each of them would contribute to the achievement of the appropriate goal or end, making a deliberate choice to act in the way that best fits that end, and then voluntarily engaging in the action itself. This movie was aired by CBS in January 2003 after the Enron Corporation went bankrupt on December 2nd of 2001. Enron was an American energy and services company established in Houston, Texas. We will write a custom essay sample on Ethics Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now Hence, this film narrates the rise and fall of this corporation. But, what is so important about Enron or watching this movie? Before Enron went bankrupt, it had approximately 20,000 employees and was one of the worldââ¬â¢s leading natural gas, electricity, and communication companies exceeding $100 billion in revenues. With the fall of Enron, many companies and businesses were affected becoming a popular symbol, internationally, of corporate corruption and fraud. Thus, this scandal will allow us to analyze the organizational behavior from different perspectives with the purpose of learning and understanding the problems and causes from an ethical standpoint. Identifies dilemma First, the different events presented on the movie will be categorized in different segments for a better analysis of the problems encountered throughout the movie. The movie started by displaying de United States flag and by taking place in a really warm house party. From my perspective, this represents the American dream being displayed surrounded by big aspirations to succeed. Furthermore, the main character, Brian Cruver, is introduced in the party, as a little kid, while talking to one of his fatherââ¬â¢s friends. This friend, Mr. Blue, is introduced as a very successful man with a lot of experience in business and life by the way he talks and portrays himself in the movie. Then, Mr. Blue tells Brian that ââ¬Å"this is Americaâ⬠and that you got to take what belongs to you. In this scene, Brian seemed to take into consideration what Mr. Blue said by displaying respect and admiration. Multiple years later, Brian seems to have made the right decisions by finishing college, and being offered an interview at Enron Corporation. This takes place in his apartment by sharing the good news with his fiance while looking at the mail. At this time, Enron Corporation was at its prime, and was highly respected being named by Fortune ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Most Innovative Companyâ⬠. Therefore, when Brian got the news that he was offered and interview, he was very proud and happy to have the opportunity to get an interview with Enron. The headquarters was pictured as a well-populated area surrounded by buildings and businesses. This scene is important because it shows that Enron Corporation was located in the heart of the city displaying its big success, power and influence. The next section of the movie takes place in Enronââ¬â¢s headquarters when Brian is heading toward his interview. As one of the leading companies in America, Enron displayed its success by owning a big building, elaborated security checkpoints, high technology, spacious rooms, etc. Brian was very excited about his interview, admiring the outstanding elaborate design of the building and its surroundings. In addition, he seemed to have all his aspirations and thoughts fulfilled by the pompous introduction of Enron. One of the key factors of this part of the movie was that Enron made it seem as if anything was possible while working in this corporation by introducing both corporate executives: Jeff Skilling and Kenneth Lay. The idea of just working with the ââ¬Å"big bossesâ⬠blew Brianââ¬â¢s mind. Brianââ¬â¢s expectations were exceeded until he found out that he was hired by mistake, and that most of his co-workers didnââ¬â¢t accept him as part of the group. In this part, we could indicate that the type of withdrawal behavior Brian displayed is referred to as loyalty. Jason Colquitt, Jeffery Lepine and Michael Wesson, authors of the book â⬠Organizational Behaviorâ⬠, define loyalty as a ââ¬Å"passive, constructive response that maintains public support for the situation while the individual privately hopes for improvementâ⬠[1]. In this manner, Brian and Enron Corporation are introduced building the base for the following events to unravel. Also, it is very important to notice that the main themes that this movie illustrates are dreams being fulfilled, success in the workplace, and making money. Considered Stakeholders In this segment, cause and effects of greed for money and power will be discusses while analyzing parts of the movie. After Brian experienced working at Enron Corporation, he was highly influenced by the high standards of living of his co-workers and supervisors. He was smothered by the expensive cars, over-the-top expense accounts and sexy female employees. This created an over-confident Brian who defined success as making big money and buying expensive cars. Job satisfaction takes a very important role in this part. Colquitt, Lepine and Wesson define Job satisfaction as a ââ¬Å"pleasurable emotional state resulting from the appraisal of oneââ¬â¢s job experiencesâ⬠. Pay, benefits and incentives make a difference in Brianââ¬â¢s life that kept him motivated to work in this company. Even though coworker and supervision satisfaction donââ¬â¢t play a role in Brianââ¬â¢s workplace, he realized that for him pay and promotion satisfaction are more important. Like this, his fiancee, Courtney, who takes a very important role, is introduced. Courtney was a very humble person who seems to have been brought up in a modest home in the country. During the movie it is shown that Courtney noticed the change in Brianââ¬â¢s personality when he revealed his change by buying a brand new car, television, and by scheduling a big reception costing more than $60,000. This exhibits the negative influence of money in a personââ¬â¢s life. In my opinion, it is easy to get overwhelmed by greed because of the carnal pleasures that are present in the world. Analyses Alternatives The following part will discuss cause and effect in the workplace. First, the question is, how does money affect people in the workplace and life? Because we are in a material world, it is easy to define our success with the amount of money and properties we possess. In this movie, the change in Brianââ¬â¢s personality, before and after, is clearly seen. People and the environment are important factors of why Brian suddenly started changing his moral foundations into making money without caring about the benefit of others. It was clear that he didnââ¬â¢t see what he was doing because power can be blinding. Although, Brian only made a small percentage of what the executives made, the change in Brianââ¬â¢s personality and morals was just as dramatic. Now imagine the greed of the top executives with their level of power and influence. Of course, the result would be a higher magnitude of blindness; the executives base their goals on false and faulty decisions. Thus, the effect of these false and faulty decisions would lead to corrupted results, which would also lead Enron Corporation into bankruptcy while shareholders and employees suffered the most. In addition, these decisions led Courtney to leave Brian. ââ¬Å"Mood and emotionsâ⬠, presented in the Organizational Behavior textbook, is very important. Defined by Colquitt, Leptine and Wesson, Moods are ââ¬Å"states of feeling that are often mild in intensity, last for an extended period of time, and are not explicitly directed at or caused by anythingâ⬠. Brian wasnââ¬â¢t in a bad mood but he had reasons not to be content because his love life was falling apart. Nevertheless, he didnââ¬â¢t let these emotions affect him. However, Stress did play an important role in Brianââ¬â¢s life. Stress is defined as a feeling of tension during a critical situation. Stress can cause many problems according to the Organization Behavior textbook such as: headaches, stomach upsets, backaches or sleeping difficulties. While Enron Corporation was going down because of the lack of smart and good decision, Brian was going through a period of stress in his life. There are 2 types of stressors presented in the textbook: Hindrance stressors that can hinder personal accomplishments and Challenge stressors that can act as a motivator towards learning, growth and achievement [2]. In this case in the movie, Hindrance stressors were the ones who took control in Brianââ¬â¢s life by affecting him in the workplace. There were moments on this movie scene where he woke up in his apartment in the afternoon. Also, when Mr. Blue called him to go to his house and was drinking because of the stress that he had because he was going to jail. Choose and Action Money is a big challenge for people in many ways. It can either help you momentarily by providing something you canââ¬â¢t afford or it can increase your self-esteem by giving you a sense of accomplishment. Many people describe success with the money they generate every year. Thatââ¬â¢s why the main influence in this film is Money, and a side effect of this, power. What would have been the best action to take? The best action to take is to present the problem so It could be identified and solved, instead of hiding the problem. They covered it by deceiving the media, employees, and others. By proclaiming that everything was good, Kenneth Lay decided to retire. Then, Jeff Skillingââ¬â¢s duty was to cover Layââ¬â¢s lies by promoting hope to the employees saying that Enron will go back in business strong and better than before. Thus, by not identifying and presenting the problems, the catastrophic event was inevitable. In addition, when a person bases their goals and achievements on self-benefit, this usually does not lead to a good outcome. Personal Story Personally, I believe that if there is corruption in the workplace it is because of wrong decisions. Wrong decision are defined as corrupt and unethical choices made most of the times by people at the top of the food chain such as: executives, managers, etc. These decisions are based on selfish motives that encourage the decision maker to do it with less hesitation. Sometimes these selfish motives can be confused by the person as an act of righteousness or for a good purpose. Nevertheless, I believe that selfish decisions, decisions without considering the welfare of others, can have a less effective result than a positive outcome. In this case, the thought of being wealthier was what invaded the executivesââ¬â¢ minds and based on this, they were guided to commit errors affecting Enron Corporation, employees, investors, etc. In the following portion of the report, I will share previous experiences that I had in the work place. As a student from Purdue University Calumet, one of the goals that I have is to be successful after I graduate, to find a good job, and to be independent. Besides these motives, there are other reasons why Iââ¬â¢m going to college such as helping my family and meeting their expectations. A few weeks into the semester, I experienced something very peculiar that had a great effect in my life and goals. I got offered an opportunity to work for a multi-level marketing company while going to school. I was introduced to this company through an invitation of a friend. He invited me to a conference where this business-like man introduced the company by explaining who they are and what they do through a power point presentation. After 20 minutes into the conference, I was blown away by the possible opportunities this company was offering. The system of how they work didnââ¬â¢t answer all my questions, but it all sounded good to my ears. It was explained that if I join this company, I could have the chance to make a lot of money such as the person who did the presentation. But, what troubled me at first was the fact that you needed to pay $499 to join the company. Of course, all this sounded very fishy, but the thought of maybe getting the chance to make 3 figures and having more time, just kept invading my mind. This well-dressed man came to me explaining this ââ¬Å"once in a lifetime chance opportunity ââ¬Å"as he called, after the presentation. I would like to point out that so far money is a key factor and influence blocking my mind from making a reasonable decision. Note that Money is one of the biggest motivators and the top factor in job satisfaction. Later that day, after the presentation was over, as I mentioned, he came to ask me to sign up front by paying $499. I signed up, but after plenty of inside research about the company, I confirmed that they made their profit off of people paying more on their monthly bills. After this experience, I decided to get my refund. A huge influence in making my decision was self-awareness. Defined by Colquitt, Lepine and Wesson, self-awarness refers ââ¬Å"to the ability of an individual to understand the types of emotions he or she is experiencing, the willingness to acknowledge them, and the capability to express them naturallyâ⬠. In addition, Perceptual ability ââ¬Å"refers to being able to perceive, understand, and recall patterns of informationâ⬠played a very important role. When I heard about this opportunity, my perceptual ability and self-awarness kicked in giving me a sense of alert. Because of these factors plus my own ethical values, I decided to make this decision of retrieving myself from this unethical business. References 1. Jason A. Colquitt, Jeffery A. Leptine, Michael J. Dominoes vs. Pizza Hut free essay sample
Dominos and Pizza Hut, the two big US fast food chains entered India in 1996. Each claimed it had the original recipe as the Italians first wrote it and was trying desperately to create brand loyalty. Dominos and Pizza Hut tried to grab as large a slice of the pizza pie as possible. Dominos and Pizza Hut expanded their market ever since they entered India. Dominos had grown from one outlet in 1996, to over 500 outlets in April 2012. Pizza Hut too, which began with just a single outlet in 1996 has over 200 outlets in 2012. Dominos entered India in 1996 through a franchise agreement with Vam Bhartia Corp. The first outlet was opened in Delhi. With the overwhelming success of the first outlet, the company opened another outlet in Delhi. We will write a custom essay sample on Dominoes vs. Pizza Hut or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page By 2000, Dominos had a presence in all the major cities and towns in India. Pizza Hut entered India in June 1996 with its first outlet in Delhi. Positioning to customer needs When Dominos entered the Indian market, the concept of home delivery was still in its nascent stages. It existed only in some major cities and was restricted to delivery by the friendly neighbourhood fast food outlets. Eating out at branded restaurants was more prevalent. To penetrate the Indian market, Dominos introduced an integrated home delivery system from a network of company outlets within 30 minutes of the order being placed. However, Dominos was not the trendsetter so far as home delivery was concerned. Delhi based fast food chain; Nirulas was the first to start free home delivery in 1994. But where Dominos stole the market was its efficient delivery record. GouthamAdvani, Chief of Marketing, Dominos Pizza India, said, What really worked its way into the Indian mind set was the promised thirty minute delivery. Dominos also offered compensation: Rs. 30/- off the price tag, if there was a delay in delivery. For the first 4 years in India, Dominos concentrated on its Delivery act. For its delivery promise to work, Dominos followed an 11-minute schedule: one minute for taking down the order, one minute for Pizza-making, six minutes oven-time, and three minutes for packing, sealing and exit. Pizza Hut, on the other hand, laid more emphasis on its restaurant dining experience. It positioned itself as a family restaurant and also concentrated on wooing kids. Its delivery service was not time-bound. A company official said, The Pizza making process takes about 20 minutes and since we dont usually deliver to places which are beyond the reachable-in-half-an-hour distance, customers can expect home delivery within 45 minutes. Moreover, analysts felt that Pizza was something that just was not meant to be delivered. Said Vivek Sure, Projects Manager, Pizza Express, If you dont eat pizza fresh, it turns cold and soggy. However, Dominos seemed to have overcome this problem through its delivery pack called Dominos Heatwave. Localizing the Menu Since its entry into India, Dominos introduced nine new toppings for Pizzas to cater to the local tastes. Different flavours were introduced in different parts of India. Advani said, The Indian palate is very definitive people are extremely finicky and choosy, not too willing to experiment. Food tastes vary from region to region. To capture the market, we had to localize flavours. Thus, Deluxe Chicken with Mustard Sauce and Sardines were confined to the East, Mutton Ghongura and Chicken Chettinad to the South and Chicken Pudina to Mumbai. Butter chicken, MakhaniPaneer and the ChatpataChana Masala were confined to the North. Very soon, Pizza Hut followed Dominos and offered customized Spicy Paneer and Chicken Tikka toppings. Apart from this, it also opened a 100% vegetarian restaurant at Ahmedabad, a one-of-its-kind worldwide. The restaurant also offered a special Jain menu, which did not have a single root-based ingredient to fit in with the food habits of Jains. Another city-specific adaptation of its menu by Pizza Hut was the restaurant in Hyderabad, (Andhra Pradesh) which offered Halal meat and chicken only with no beef and pork products in the menu. Dominoes vs. Pizza Hut free essay sample To penetrate the Indian market, Dominos introduced an integrated home delivery system from a network of company outlets within 30 minutes of the order being placed. We will write a custom essay sample on Dominoes vs. Pizza Hut or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Pizza Hut, on the other hand, laid more emphasis on its restaurant dining experience. Volcanoes Essays - Volcanology, Plate Tectonics, Igneous Rocks
Volcanoes By Tricia Severson 2nd hour Science 4/30/98 A volcano is a vent, or opening, in the surface of the Earth through which magma and associated gases and ash erupt. The word also refers to the form or structure, usually conical, produced by accumulations of erupted material. Volcanoes occur mainly near plate tectonic boundaries and are especially common around the Pacific basin, called the Pacific Ring of Fire (see Plate Tectonics). Humanity has long been awed by this powerful force of nature. The Romans attributed volcanic events to Vulcan, the god of fire and metalworking. In AD 79 the eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Polynesians believe volcanoes to be ruled by the fire goddess Pele. One of the most spectacular volcanic eruptions in recorded history occurred in 1883 with the explosion of Krakatoa, an island in the Sunda Strait near Java (see Krakatoa). A more recent example is the dramatic 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the Cascade Range in Washington State. Volcano Formation and Eruptions Volcanic eruptions may be violent, even catastrophic, or relatively mild. The most explosive eruptions are essentially blasts of steam that create spectacular displays. Quieter fissure eruptions occur when molten rock pushes through long cracks in the Earth's crust and floods the surrounding landscape. Such repeated outpourings of lava can fill surrounding valleys and bury low hills, creating thick lava sequences that eventually become plateaus (see Plateau). The origin of molten rock, referred to by geologists as magma, is not clearly understood. About 80 percent of all magma is composed of basalt rock. Geophysical research suggests that volcanic magma forms near the base of the Earth's crust and moves upward to a shallow magma chamber before erupting at the surface. Magmas rise because they are less dense than the rocks at lower depths, and their heat probably weakens surrounding rocks. The upward movement of magma may also be due to expanding gases within the molten rock or to chemical reactions that dissolve rocks above the magma. Volcanic material moves toward the surface through channelways, or volcanic conduits, and is extruded through vents at the Earth's surface. (See also Lava and Magma.) Eruptions take different forms depending on the composition of the magma when it reaches the surface. Sudden eruptions are often associated with low-viscosity (more fluid) magma where the expanding gases form a froth that becomes a light, glassy rock called pumice. In eruptions of high-viscosity (thicker) magmas, the gas pressure shatters the rock into fragments. Pyroclastic rocks, formed by volcanic explosion, are named according to size: volcanic ash if sand-sized or smaller, volcanic bombs if larger. Consolidated ash is called tuff. Quieter, more passive eruptions release fluid basalt lava from dikes or dike swarms (magma intrusions that cut across layers of rock). These eruptions cover large areas and often produce ropy, or pahoehoe, lava flows. Thicker basalt lava breaks into chunks or blocks, forming blocky lava flows, called aa. The products of volcanism may be classified into two groups: lava and pyroclastics. Lava is the fluid phase of volcanic activity. Pyroclastics (also called tephra) are various-sized particles of hot debris thrown out of a volcano. Whether lava or pyroclastics are being ejected, the eruption is normally accompanied by the expulsion of water and gases, many of which are poisonous. Lava usually forms long, narrow rivers of molten rock that flow down the slopes of a volcano. Explosive eruptions tend to be spectacular events best observed from a safe distance. Earthquakes, high columns of vapors, lightning, and strong whirlwinds often accompany the explosions. The eruption of Krakatoa unleashed a tsunami, a large seismic sea wave, that swept the coasts of Java and Sumatra and drowned more than 36,000 people. A volcano can grow with frightening speed and often affects territory far beyond the area on which the cone forms. When volcanoes are born in the sea, the eruptions may be more violent than those on land because the contact between molten rock and seawater produces steam. Volcanoes also create craters and calderas. Craters are formed either by the massive collapse of material during volcanic activity, by unusually violent explosions, or later by erosion during dormancy. Calderas are large, basin-shaped depressions. Most of them are formed after a magma chamber drains and no longer supports the overlying cone, which then collapses inward to create the basin. One of the most famous examples is the still-active Kilauea caldera in Hawaii. Types of Volcanoes Volcanoes are usually classified by shape and size. These are determined by such

Managers must be able to ensure that his company does exist in the future. Hence his planning skills include ability to Forecast future environment Think ahead Plot organizational objectivesChoose strategies to attain these objectives Reach their performance standards When an organization increases its complexity, it needs its managers to acquire skills as needed to fit the present needs of the system. Value is an opinion or belief a person holds about something while personality is a sum up of personal traits of an individual. Itââ¬â¢s determined by our physical constitution, beliefs and values he holds. Perception is how a person interprets something from what he see, smell or feel while attitude is a personââ¬â¢s behaviour to a particular event, situation or person. Though we canââ¬â¢t observe it directly, we can observe its consequences.Attitudes can be learned and have three aspects ââ¬â cognitive, affective and behaviourial. manageskills2 Controlling skills It consists of actions and decisions which managers undert ake to ensure that outputs obtained are consistent with desired ones. Any difference between the actual and planned results must be corrected by management by taking appropriate actions. So, a management has a pre-determined standard according to which outputs are needed to be checked. manageskills1 Decision making skills They are related to planning process and pervade all other modules of managerial skills.A managerââ¬â¢s skills and effectiveness lies in making appropriate and timely decisions most suited to that particular situation. Sometimes repetitive or routine problems are involved which are to be verified periodically. So, at the end of all the above managerial skills, you may be able to know the overall skills of a manager. Also, there are different levels of managers ââ¬â first level managers, having the direct contact with the employees, middle level managers to whom the first level managers report, comparatively less in number than first level managers and top le vel managers who are the overall decision makers of the company.Managerial skills at various levels These skills refer to the ability of managers at different managerial levels of the system hierarchy. Katz in 1974 categorized managerial skills into three types. Technical skill Itââ¬â¢s the ability to work with resources in a particular area of expertise. For example, a lab assistant must know his subject well, to help the project students. An accountant should know everything about accounts and balance sheet and a surgeon should be well expert in surgery. In a small manufacturing organization, top boss should have a clear idea of technology skills. Very often, training programs can help employees to expertise in technical skills. Human skill It deals with the ability of a manager to work effectively among his group of members, interact well and take suitable decisions to lead them from front. Communication skill of a manager is very important. Also, to provide a better working at mosphere for his subordinates, a manager is needed to possess certain human skills and it can be developed without any formal training. Conceptual skillItââ¬â¢s the ability to see organization as a whole and recognizing relationships or links of different modules within the system. Also, it identifies the impact of changes of one module affecting other modules, it may be one or two or a group. As a manager you need to view situations and determine the inter-related factors. Also, his ability to co-ordinate and integrate a variety of factors is very important. Top management skills No doubt, top management has to run the organization as a whole and hence they need some special, distinct management skills to control the whole organization. Most important of them include Building a strong and efficient team of people at the middle management level and should encourage his subordinates to learn some of his management skills as well. Need to monitor and review the functioning of an org anization at different time intervals and check if the outputs are matching the already set targets. To find competent human resources to fit their organization and encourage and appreciate them in the form of rewards if needed.Develop a distinct and special skill to make you different from others and prompt others to follow you. You can even guide your subordinates by sharing your experiences and piece of knowledge. Thus skills of a manager is essentially two ways ââ¬â functional, which involves planning, organizing, leading, controlling and decision making and skills of managers involving technical, human and conceptual. Through this article, I have given a brief description of managerial skills needed for an organization.

Introduction to Management - Essay Example in order to convey a less localized image in the face of its ever-increasing global influence, is one of the largest and most profitable private sector energy corporations in the world. Employing close to 100,000 people and daily serving millions of customers worldwide, BP handles energy at all levels, from exploration and production to refining and marketing to developing gas, power, and renewable sources. BP was originally founded in 1909 as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company by William Knox Dââ¬â¢Arcy who was given a concession by the Shah of Iran to search for oil in the region. The company expanded slowly, with a few bumps along the road due to the changing political conditions. By 1954, it had formally adopted the title of The British Petroleum Company, and in the 1960s, it started to widen its horizons beyond the Middle East and explore hitherto untapped oil-rich areas, such as Alaska (USA) and the North Sea. Through development and acquisitions, BP has steadily increased its transnational dominance to attain its present towering position in the league of petrochemical giants. I was about six years old when I first realised Mum and Dad were Essay
I was about six years old when I first realised Mum and Dad were fighting, Mullender et al (2002) What does current research and practice say about the effects - Essay Example The infant and young children grow at the laps of the foster mothers the so-called nannies experience the world in a different revelation. It is like feeding the baby with container milk instead of mother's breast, whatever is the reason. Studies showed that the role of the parents is more significant than first thought as we moved into the concept of primary caregiver. In a study published in Child Development May/June 2003, Volume 74, Number 3, Pages 801-821, Bruce J. Ellis, et al, found that presence of the natural father was the most significant factor in reducing rates of early sexual activity and rates of teenage pregnancy in girls. Covariate factors used included early conduct problems, maternal age at first childbirth, race, maternal education, father's occupational status, family living standards, family life stress, early mother-child interaction, measures of psychosocial adjustment and educational achievement, school qualifications, mood disorder, anxiety disorder, suicide attempts, violent offending, and conduct disorder. Therefore, we must agree that love massively matters in the formative growth of a normal child. If we cannot bestow this incredible value on them, they are bound to lead an abnormal life. In case of unexpected circumstances, there lies the role of social workers and state legislations to ensure a life worth to live. Why Love Matters of Sue Gerhardt stirs our emotional moral responsibilities for those who are involved in the care of children, from expecting mothers through to policy makers. Distilling the current science into easy-to-understand prose, Sue Gerhardt has provided a founding text for the future health of modern society. It explains that love is essential to brain development in the early years of life, particularly to the development of our social and emotional brain systems, and presents the startling discoveries that provide the answers to how our emotional lives work. The earliest relationship shapes the baby's nervo us system, with lasting consequences and our adult life has earlier influence since infancy stage. The development of the brain can affect future emotional well being, and goes on to look at specific early 'pathways' that can affect the way we respond to stress and lead to conditions such as anorexia, addiction, and anti-social behavior. Mother's love is therefore mysteriously magical while father's love involves the nurturing passion for the baby along with the other family members and happy surroundings. While focusing all the goodness of relationship we nevertheless come across domestic violence in a male dominance society. Domestic violence, men's abusive power and control over women in intimate relationships, is a widespread but still largely hidden problem. Rethinking Domestic Violence explodes the myths concerning its nature, causes, and explores how the responses of social workers and probation officers to the women, children and men involved need to be far better co-coordinated and more effective. Women experiencing violence and abuse actually are in need of social work setting but, to date, their needs have largely been ignored. Their unhappy relationship quite often breed ancillary problems bring devastation to ruin all sorts of peace. This book looks at men's violence
